Better control of your content with a CMS 

Using a modern Content Management System (CMS) like WordPress means you do not need to reinvent the wheel. You don't have to build every feature from scratch. However, managing those blocks depends heavily on your setup.

Keeping your website healthy requires balancing your site’s features with add-ons, server environments, content freshness, and proactive security measures. 

• Plugin & Core Updates: A CMS like WordPress operates on a core system extended by independent add-ons called plugins. Developed by a wide community ranging from solo freelancers to entire software teams, plugins must be maintained continuously. 

• Sequence Matters: Always update individual plugins before updating the WordPress core to avoid compatibility conflicts. 

• Automation: Modern WordPress setups support automated updates, while managed hosts often provide visual regression testing to ensure updates do not break your design. 

• Server-Side Infrastructure: Behind the scenes, server software requires constant care. PHP serves as the underlying engine for WordPress, while HTTP server software (such as Apache or Nginx) handles incoming traffic and routing. Update plugins and other pieces of software 

• Consistently updating plugins and core software naturally patches broken code and seals known vulnerabilities before malicious actors can exploit them. 

• Security plugins do not automatically repair flawed code. Instead, they act as monitoring tools by tracking user actions, monitoring login attempts, and log file changes. 

• Remember to audit the vendor: ensure the plugin is actively maintained by a reputable team, so it does not become a security threat itself. The same goes for other plugins and pieces of code you addto your site. 

You may also think that if your site is small, you have nothing to fear or hide. However, malicious actors may combine your data with pieces of information they have gathered from elsewhere and gained access to in other data breaches. Bad actors may also use a hacked site for their benefit and use it to carry external attacks elsewhere. In this sense, better cybersecurity is not about individual websites and workingalone, but a common feat that can be improved together.
