Everything online, everything accessible? - About education and inclusion

Video on a laptop of a teacher standing in front of a blackboard.Education is one of the most important pillars of our modern society. This makes it all the more important that it really is accessible to everyone. The days when teaching materials were handed out in the form of worksheets or beamed onto a screen using overhead projectors are long gone. Today, many work processes are increasingly digitized, and that naturally includes the education sector. This makes digital accessibility an indispensable component here.

"Everyone has the right to education and access to vocational training and continuing education."

This is also stated in an extract from Article 14 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union.

Everyday education, especially at universities and colleges, is characterized by digital processes in many respects. Access to information, online course selection, access to certificates and the possibility of online feedback are just a few examples. Lectures, seminars and exams also often take place digitally, and the use of laptops and tablets is widespread at educational institutions.

Digital accessibility in the education sector aims to create an equal learning environment. All students, regardless of their individual needs and abilities, should have equal opportunities to benefit from educational resources. This requires the integration of accessible design principles and the use of appropriate technologies, such as the tools of Eye-Able®.

Digital accessibility for more effective education

Schools and universities should strive to design their online educational content and platforms to be easily accessible to as many people as possible, because digital accessibility benefits not just some people, but everyone. Especially in the education sector, since it depends on social participation. And it is precisely this that can be promoted through accessibility.

It also contributes to a better learning experience for all. Clearly structured online materials and user-friendly platforms not only benefit students with disabilities, but also make navigation and access to education easier for all students. This creates greater equality of opportunity and thus also promotes general participation and involvement in education.

At a time when education is becoming increasingly digitized, digital accessibility in the education sector is much more than a social issue. It is a crucial and practical step to ensure that all students and pupils have equal educational opportunities and can thrive in an inclusive, digital education world. Let's work together to create a world where no one is excluded!
