Accessibility as Business-Booster
It has been official since June 28, 2025: digital accessibility is a legal requirement in Germany. Anyone offering websites, online stores or digital services must ensure that they are accessible to all people - regardless of disability, age or technical equipment.
And: the supervisory authorities are already checking whether the requirements are met. Those who do not react risk penalties, complaints and loss of image.
However, instead of simply reacting to pressure, many companies are using the situation strategically, as accessible digital offerings bring tangible economic benefits.
Study shows: Accessibility works - for everyone
The latest Capterra survey of 2,748 company representatives shows how much potential there is in accessible offerings:
- 38% of companies record higher sales after making their website more accessible.
- 53% report higher customer loyalty.
- Over 50% use AI-based tools to identify and remove barriers.
Accessibility has therefore long been more than just an issue for specialists - it is a competitive factor.
Affected now: Those who are not yet compliant after June 28
All products and services placed on the market after June 28, 2025 must be accessible. The same applies to existing digital offers if contracts are concluded or products are purchased via them.
The same applies to existing digital offerings if they can be used to conclude contracts or purchase products - for example in online stores, customer portals or self-service systems.
Websites that are not yet compliant must either:
- improve immediately,
- or openly communicate what is being improved and what interim solutions exist (e.g. telephone ordering options, accessible document versions on request).
AI helps - but does not replace a strategy
Many companies are now using artificial intelligence to efficiently identify and remove barriers. The most common applications include
- automatic creation of image descriptions (alt texts)
- Contrast and color palette analysis
- Automatic subtitling of videos
- Simulation of keyboard navigation
- continuous monitoring with automated reports
But as helpful as these tools are: A purely technological solution is not enough. Only the combination of AI, manual checks, user feedback and strategic planning will lead to sustainable accessibility.
