The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines

Become accessible to everyone and reap the benefits! The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) by W3C set an international standard for creating inclusive digital spaces. How to make your website WCAG compliant? Eye-Able® makes it easy!

Benefits for organizations

Increased reach

By removing barriers, the reach of digital services is increased. People with disabilities can thus access information and services without any problems. This also promotes general inclusion and equality in the digital space.

Legal security

Compliance with the WCAG ensures that organizations meet legal requirements, avoiding legal conflicts and possible sanctions. It also protects the organization from potential lawsuits and improves compliance standards.

Positive publicity

Organizations that provide accessible services demonstrate their commitment to inclusion and social responsibility. This can strengthen the organization's public image and increase user confidence.

Increased user friendliness

Accessible designs are often more user-friendly for people without disabilities. A clear structure, easy-to-read text and intuitive navigation improve the overall user experience.

Overview

All about the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)

What are the WCAG?

The WCAG set the standard for creating accessible digital content and websites for people with disabilities. As technology and trends shift, the World Wide Web Consortium's (W3C) and the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) collaborate with disability community working groups to periodically review and update these guidelines.

Adopt WCAG for Inclusive Digital Access!

These guidelines aim to make web content more accessible to individuals with disabilities, covering a wide range of recommendations for making web content more usable. Compliance with WCAG is crucial for public sector websites and mobile applications under the EU Web Accessibility Directive.

What does accessibility mean anyway?

The German Disability Equality Act (BGG), in effect since 2002, defines accessibility as the ability of people with disabilities to find, access, and use facilities, transportation, information systems, communication tools, and other designed areas of life in the same way as people without disabilities, without difficulty or outside assistance. This ensures that people with disabilities can use everything independently, just like anyone else.

Absolute necessity for people with disabilities

Around 1 billion people worldwide have a disability. Of these, 215 million are visually impaired and therefore have major problems with website usability. It is no longer enough just to make buildings accessible; inclusion must also be practiced on the Internet. All people should be able to participate equally in digital media.

Key principles

The four WCAG principles

Perceivable

Information and components on a website must be accessible to all people (e.g. through image descriptions, alternative text).

Operable

All people, including those with physical or cognitive disabilities, can easily navigate and interact with all components (e.g. clear structure, simple controls).

Understandable

The language and content is easy to understand for all people, whether they have learning difficulties or are non-native speakers (e.g. through clear forms, simple language).

Robust

Content must work reliably across different technologies and assistive devices. This ensures accessibility as technologies change.
